The Somnath Temple, located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Gujarat's Saurashtra region, is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India. It holds the distinction of being the first among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Mythology and Legends

  • The Somnath Temple is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. It's said that Chandra (the Moon God) was cursed by his father-in-law, Daksha, for showing favoritism among his wives (Daksha's daughters). Chandra prayed to Lord Shiva at the site of Somnath and was relieved of the curse.
  • In gratitude, Chandra built the first temple here — in gold. Later versions were said to be made by Ravana (in silver), Krishna (in sandalwood), and Bhima (in stone), showing the temple’s repeated reverence across different Yugas (epochs).

 Spiritual Importance

  • First Jyotirlinga: Somnath is the foremost of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, which are powerful manifestations of Shiva believed to have emerged as columns of fire.
  • Eternal Shrine: Known as the "Shrine Eternal", the temple symbolizes the indestructible nature of faith and devotion. Despite being destroyed multiple times, it has always been rebuilt, representing resilience and spiritual continuity.
